Everyone’s favorite steel magnolia has hit yet another major milestone in her illustrious, big-haired life. Country doyenne Dolly Parton recently took to her website to reveal that she and her husband, Carl Dean, last week celebrated 50 years of marriage. The announcement also included the news that her wedding dress and Dean’s wedding suit would go on display at the museum inside Dollywood on July 1. The “9 to 5” singer, who just began her biggest North American tour in more than 25 years, spoke openly to the press about renewing her vows, saying, “If I had it to do all over, I’d do it all over again, and we did. I’m dragging him kicking and screaming into the next 50 years.” If their golden anniversary proves anything, it’s that Dean has never, ever put up a fight.
The two met outside of the Wishy Washy laundromat in Nashville, just after Parton moved to the city to work on her music. They dated for two years and were married on May 30, 1966. He was 23 and she was 20. Dean and Parton have managed to keep their longtime love affair private throughout the past five decades, even as Parton’s career took off and she became the icon she is today. Offstage and without the flash and glitz and makeup, Parton cherishes her downtime with Dean. “We like to get in our little RV and just be simple,” she once said. “I love to read, I love to cook, I love to be with my husband. I put on my comfy clothes—I call them my baby clothes—and we just relax.” And while they may be down-to-earth behind closed doors, the public has been given glimpses of their adoration for each other, perhaps most prominently in the song she wrote for him, “From Here to the Moon and Back.” Love everlasting, indeed.
Above, take a look back at Dean and Parton’s epic 50 years together.
