The 1889 Louisville Colonels hold the mark for longest losing streak in history with a skid of 26 games. In the modern era, the '61 Phillies dropped 23 straight and, as Ken Rosenthal recently recalled, the '88 Orioles opened the season with 21 consecutive losses.
All of those stretches pale in comparison to the worst losing streak in the history of sports: Charlie Brown's 942 straight losses.
On Monday night, Kristen Bell hosted an hour-long special on ABC to mark the 50th anniversary of "A Charlie Brown Christmas." Bell walked viewers through the origin of the holiday special and the spinoffs it inspired, some of which featured baseball scenes. (You can watch the whole special on ABC.)
And that hardly scratches the surface of how truly hapless Charlie Brown's baseball team was. They once lost a game, 600-0. Peppermint Patty once threw a no-hitter and went 5-for-5 at the plate with five home runs ... and the Peanuts still lost, 37-5, due to numerous fielding errors.
With all that losing going on, it's probably a good idea for Charlie Brown to refocus his energy on the game's fundamentals in hopes of ending the streak. Luckily, he's got some famous (and talented) friends who are willing to lend a hand.
Madison Bumgarner (the 2014 World Series MVP) and Buster Posey (the 2012 NL MVP) appeared together in Monday's special, offering to school Charlie Brown on the basics of hitting and pitching.
Bumgarner: Charlie Brown, come to San Francisco and I can give you some tips on pitching.
Posey: I'll even teach you how to hit.
Together: Happy anniversary, Charlie Brown.
With that added training, and his usual focus on teamwork and a positive attitude, it looks like Charlie Brown is well on his way to getting off the schneid.
