Whether they’ll admit to it or not, most men don’t like to ask for fashion advice. President Barack Obama might beg to differ. He’s had no problem charging his wife, First Lady Michelle Obama, with his style evolution over the past eight years. In an interview with Vogue in 2013, he said, “Michelle’s like Beyoncé in that song. ‘Let me upgrade ya!’ She upgraded me.”
And what an upgrade it has been! Taking cues from his style icon of a wife, the President has filled out his closet with sharply tailored suits. And his stealth menswear looks are a nice complement to Michelle’s daring and instinctive fashion sensibilities, which easily move from Naeem Khan couture gowns, to whimsical Gucci dresses, to affordable basics from J.Crew. Whether they’re entertaining heads of state, reading to a gaggle of kids at their annual Easter egg hunt at the White House, or vacationing with their daughters Sasha and Malia in Martha’s Vineyard, the pair has always remained in sync with their wardrobe. Striking that kind of harmonious balance is the stuff of couples’ style goals, to be sure.
